One program we recommend to send and receive text messages is a program called Trillian.  The program is free but also available with upgrades for a small fee.

Downloading and Installing Trillian

Download the program and install it as you would any other program.

Create a Trillian Account

Although Trillian allows you to use popular instant messaging platforms by adding their usernames and passwords, you will need a 'master account' for Trillian itself to use to log in to the Trillian program.

When you first run the Trillian program you'll need to create an account before you can log in.
