Extension Numbers to avoid when you're adding extensions
One convenient feature of your Cool PBX is that it will not allow you to enter an extension number that is already in use either as another extension, a feature code, or some other functionality like paging and intercom.
If you can enter a number without rejection from the PBX, then theoretically it's feasible to use it. For organizational purposes though, some extension numbering schemes are better than others. Traditionally, Cool PBX extensions are organized in the following way:
Extensions 01-99
Two-digit numbers on your Cool PBX are reserved for feature codes and other functionality.
Generally. you'll want to avoid 2-digit extension numbers. A good number of 2-digit numbers are already in use on your system as Feature Codes and more could be added in the future.
Extensions 101-399
Some offices that already had telephone service before switching to Cool Telecom already had established extension numbers for personnel and general areas of the business. Typically these were 3-digit extensions starting with either 1xx, 2xx, or 3xx. In some systems, 300-399 are used for the paging and intercom functions of Cool PBX.
Typical 3-digit extensions you'll likely find to be already in use are:
- 100 - PBX testing (Cool Telecom office use)
- 198 - PBX NOC (Cool Telecom office use)
- 199 - PBX Admin (Cool Telecom office use)
- 200 - General voicemail
- 300 - Page all paging group.
Unless you had another range of extensions prior to switching to us, Cool PBX by default sets your extension numbers in the 201 - 299 range with Cell Phone extensions being exactly 100 higher in the 301 - 399 range.
Extensions 401-499
This range of numbers is generally reserved for queue numbers, call groups, intercom extensions, and other uses. 411 is a working extension to call directory assistance. Try it. If it doesn't work, we would love for you to let us know about it by clicking here to send us a ticket.
Extensions 501-699
While this range may become reserved in the future as new innovations are released on the Cool PBX platform, for now, these extensions could be used if you've run out of extensions in the previous extension ranges listed above.
Extensions 701-799
This range is reserved for softphone extensions.
Extensions 801-999
While this range may become reserved in the future as new innovations are released on the Cool PBX platform, for now, these extensions could be used if you've run out of extensions in the previous extension ranges listed above.
4-Digit (or more) Extensions
There is no restriction on 4-digit extension numbers or higher numbers of digits up to and including 10 digits (like a 10-digit phone number custom extension).
The only exception is 1411 which should call Directory Assistance. If it doesn't, we would love for you to let us know about it by clicking here to send us a ticket.
